Infinity (Large Hardcover)

Description: Pavel Banka "Infinity" Rudolfinum Museum, Prague 2001.
This hardcover volume is the complete catalogue to Pavel Banka's major retrospective at Prague's Rudolfinum Museum - The Czech Republic's most important venue for contemporary art.
The book, of 65 large, beautifully printed plates, is divided into the four parts of the series: forests, hills and meadows, sea, and sky. The photographs are poetic rather than simply descriptive.
In this work Pavel Banka embraces not only the dusky sobriety of his Eastern European roots, but the poetic, lyrical darkness of all the best of Czech photography: Sudek's venison-rich almost black (but never quite) shadows; and Funke's artistically but ambiguously arranged, dimly illuminated planes. After defining and caressing all this darkness Banka decamps with it as his blessed baggage to the American pacific nortwest whose dour damp coast provides the perfect fertile ground for this artist to plant his poetic vision - to indulge his Czech Schattenfreud, creating an adagio movement of epic grace and proportion. -- Alan Klotz
